In Germany, the relationship between the church and the state is characterized by the principle of the separation of church and state, which is enshrined in Article 140 of the Basic Law. This legal foundation dates back to the Weimar Constitution and guarantees a considerable degree of independence for both institutions from each other. Nevertheless, there are numerous points of contact that necessitate close cooperation.
A key element of this cooperation is the church tax, which in Germany is collected by the tax offices for recognized religious communities. This special arrangement enables churches to finance their social and cultural tasks. At the same time, it subjects the churches to certain state control mechanisms, which leads to controversial discussions about the limits of this collaboration.
