The exponential progress in the field of artificial intelligence has revived the philosophical debate about the ontological status and epistemological implications of artificial cognition. While algorithmic systems display significant achievements in pattern recognition and data processing, this confronts us with the essential question of whether these operations actually constitute a genuinely human act of understanding. A reductionist approach that reduces cognition to mere information processing thereby places itself in a normative field of tension with phenomenological and hermeneutic perspectives, which emphasize the constitution of the subject and intentionality as the conditio sine qua non of authentic knowledge. The mere emulation of cognitive processes does not eo ipso establish the validity of their inherent semantic depth.
The central antinomy culminates in the inability of artificial systems to evoke qualia or phenomena of consciousness. They lack the inherent intentionality that allows the human mind to refer to entities and not merely to process meaning but also to generate it. An algorithm may be able to train complex language models and generate coherent text corpora, yet the semantic depth that a human speaker attaches to a lexeme remains inaccessible to it. This epistemological discontinuity between syntactic operation and the semantic constitution of meaning gives rise to skepticism about whether artificial cognition could ever transcend mere emulation to reproduce an authentic subjective phenomenology.
Within the hermeneutic paradigm, which conceives of understanding as a circular process of interpretation and pre-understanding, the limits of artificial cognition become strikingly apparent. A hermeneutic circle grounded in the continuous recalibration of pre-understanding on the basis of emergent experiential knowledge is inaccessible to a system without ontological anchoring and without a horizon of meaning constituted by the lifeworld and historicity. The contextualization of meanings, which transcends the mere correlation of data sets and presupposes empathy for the otherness of another person's intention, remains the exclusive domain of the human subject. Artificial systems may detect configuration patterns in contexts, but they cannot experience or interpret context as an integral part of their ontological constitution.
The epistemological boundaries of artificial cognition are therefore not primarily technological in origin but fundamentally philosophical and ontological. They point to an insurmountable dichotomy between algorithmic symbol manipulation and the phenomenological constitution of meaning. The question of whether a machine can ever achieve genuine understanding is thus not merely a question of complexity but one of ontological constitution. It constitutes a normative antinomy that compels us to reflect critically on our definitions of cognition, consciousness and understanding, and forces us to contemplate the singularity of the human subject in its intentionality and hermeneutic capacity.
