Theodor W. Adorno, a prominent figure of the Frankfurt School, coined the term 'culture industry' to critique the commercialization and standardization of cultural goods in modern society. In his work 'Dialectic of Enlightenment,' co-authored with Max Horkheimer, he describes how the culture industry manipulates the masses by offering them pre-packaged, consumer-oriented products that suppress individual creativity and critical reflection. These products are no longer expressions of authentic cultural creation but rather tools for maintaining the status quo and increasing consumption.

Adorno argues that the culture industry, through its pervasive presence in media and entertainment, pushes people into a passive consumer mindset. Films, music, and television shows are no longer produced for their artistic or intellectual quality but to meet maximal expectations and provide predictable entertainment. The conformity of content leads to a homogenization of culture, which excludes any deviation from the norm and thus threatens societal diversity.
