Dr. Steiner smiles at the class. 'Today, I have a special homework assignment for you,' she says. 'You are to interview your neighbors.' Wei is surprised. He doesn't often speak with his neighbors.
Carla lacht. 'Das ist einfach!', sagt sie. 'Ich kenne meine Nachbarn gut. Wir kochen oft zusammen.' Omar nickt. 'In meiner Straße sind alle sehr freundlich. Ich helfe oft beim Einkaufen.'
Carla laughs. 'That's easy!', she says. 'I know my neighbors well. We often cook together.' Omar nods. 'In my street, everyone is very friendly. I often help with shopping.'
Wei denkt nach. 'Ich weiß nicht...', sagt er. 'Meine Nachbarn sind sehr ruhig. Ich sehe sie selten.' Frau Dr. Steiner lächelt. 'Das ist eine gute Gelegenheit, sie kennenzulernen.'
Wei thinks. 'I'm not sure...', he says. 'My neighbors are very quiet. I rarely see them.' Dr. Steiner smiles. 'This is a good opportunity to get to know them.'
In the evening, Wei stands at his neighbor's door. He knocks. No one answers. He waits a moment and knocks again. Still no response. He sighs and goes back to his apartment.
Frau Dr. Steiner nickt. 'Das ist schade. Vielleicht versuchst du es ein anderes Mal.'
The next day in class, Wei talks about his experience. 'I knocked, but no one opened the door,' he says. Dr. Steiner nods. 'That's a shame. Maybe you can try again another time.'
